Major Sire Silver Deputy was euthanized on October 4th due to the infirmities of old age. The 29-year-old son of Deputy Minister-Silver Valley, by Mr. Prospector had been pensioned since 2008 at Brookdale Farm.
From the first foal crop by two-time Leading Sire Deputy Minister, Silver Deputy was purchased for $200,000 by Windfields Farm at the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Yearling Sale. Undefeated in two starts at 2 in the Wildfields silks, he captured Woodbine’s Swynford Stakes impressively before sustaining a career-ending knee injury.
Silver Deputy entered stud at Windfields Farm in Ontario, Canada for an initial fee of $2,500 in 1989, and became an immediate sensation with his first crop to race, finishing a close runner-up to Forty Niner on the 1992 North American Freshmen Sire List. He was then moved to Brookdale Farm where he spent the remainder of his career. His stud fee rose to $75,000 in 2000.
Ranked among the leading North American sires in 1998 and 1999, Silver Deputy sired 694 winners of more than $88 million, including seven champions and 88 stakes winners. His leading progeny include dual Eclipse champion Silverbulletday, Canadian champions Archers Bay, Deputy Inxs, Deputy Jane West, Scotzanna, Poetically, and Larkwhistle. His sons at stud include 2007 Leading North American Freshmen Sire Posse, Spring At Last, Badge of Silver, and Archers Bay.
Silver Deputy was buried at Brookdale Farm.
